Morocco, also known as “The Maghreb” or “Arab West” is a country in North Africa offering stunning coastlines, towering mountains and steeped in history. Its blend of influences from the Arab, African and European cultures have made it a hot spot for tourists, especially in recent times. The Moroccan economy is vastly boosted by tourism (as well as textiles and agriculture) and is a country on many people’s bucket list.

Morocco can be easily split into areas or regions: Mediterranean Morocco (Spanish influence), the North Atlantic Coast (where you find Casablanca), The South Atlantic Coast (home to Agadir and Essaouira), High Atlas (most popular for Marrakech), Middle Atlas (mountainous and includes Fez and Meknes), Saharan Morocco (bordering Algeria) and Anti Atlas (includes Taroudant).

Some of the main cities well worth a visit include:

  • Casablanca – A modern seaside city and a great first stop-off on your tour of Morocco. It is not only home to Morocco’s main airport, but also one of the world’s largest mosques (the Hassan II) and a historical medina.
  • Marrakech (sometimes spelt Marrakesh) – Known to many as the ‘red city,’ old and new collide in Marrakech. The city, probably the most popular with tourists, provides lots of leisure activities include shopping in the maze-like souks, visiting the Saadian tombs, Koutoubia Mosque and the Jemaa El Fnaa plaza/central square (street food, dancers and vibrant markets).  There is a busy and eclectic vibe here and lots to excite the senses!
  • Tangier – A cultural hub because of its attraction for writers, politicians, musicians and artists throughout the ages. Tangier is a charming coastal city, steeped in history and one to tick off your list of Moroccan destinations (just so you can say you visited the same place as author Mark Twain or politician Winston Churchill).
  • Agadir –Popular for its beaches, Agadir shows off the very best of Morocco’s modern and contemporary side as a relaxing tourist destination and less history/culture.
  • Fez – An imperial city, with Medieval winding streets, that is well worth a visit, but often overlooked  in terms of a popular city for tourism. Its peace compared to areas such as Marrakech make it even more enticing.
  • Meknes – a beautiful city, sometimes called the ‘Versailles of Morocco.’ Spanish styling and towering city gates and walls, the mix of cultures and times in Meknes make it a fascinating spot for visitors old and young.
  • Chefchaouen – An old favourite for visitors and a great place to start exploring the High Atlas Mountains for walkers and explorers.

The people of Morocco are welcoming and love nothing more than to tell visitors a story or sell them some of their goods. There is plenty to see and do in Morocco, including shopping at the souks, sampling the delicious food, visiting cultural sites, walking and camel riding. Enjoy a varied trip and don’t forget to try out the hammams (steam baths)!

"While it can sometimes seem remote due to its location in Africa, Morocco is highly accessible."

Flying to Morocco

There are regular flights to Casablanca and Marrakech, from Europe, New York, Dubai and other major cities of the world, as well as chartered flights to Agadir at certain times of the year. Many airlines serve Morocco, including Air France, BMI, Easyjet, Ryanair (flies to Fez as well as Marrakech) and British Airways.

Most people enter Morocco by air and it is well served for air transport, with several airports for local and international operators.

The main airport is the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. The busy airport is in a handy location for transfers across Morocco. Inside the airport there are plenty of restaurants, bars and shops if you want to pick up any essential items or simply relax. Also, another major Moroccan airport is Menara International Airport, around 6 km from Marrakech and an easy transfer by private cab. Most visitors who travel in for a long weekend to Marrakech chose Menara due to its closer proximity than Casablanca.
