What to see in Milan
Milan is a city to visit and more and more tourists choose it as a stopover during a tour in Italy, or simply for a few days of shopping and culture. Art, museums, fashion and gastronomy ... Milan is definitely waiting to be discovered!
Among the many attractions we'd like to highlight the following:
Sforzesco Castle: Built by the Visconti family in the 13th century for defensive purposes, the Sforzesco Castle was renovated and modernised two hundred years later by the will of another great Milanese family, the Sforza, who transformed it into a permanent residence.
Duomo of Milan: Undoubtedly, the key attraction of the city. Located in the centre of the square of the same name, every year it is visited by millions of tourists, who admire the wonderful white marble facade and the very high pinnacles at the top.
La Scala Theatre: One of the most famous opera houses in the world, which has hosted the best artists on its stage. Even if you are not passionate about music or ballet, visiting it is a unique opportunity if only for the beauty of its interior.
Brera Art Gallery: The pictorial wonders housed in this art gallery, make it undoubtedly one of the inevitable stops. It is the most important museum in the city and contains invaluable works by Hayez, Mantegna, Raffaello and many other famous artists.
Milan's Airports
To get to Milan by plane there are three options:
Malpensa Airport: is an intercontinental airport, flights depart and arrive from all destinations around the world, as well as being a reference point for domestic flights. In fact, it is in the municipality of Ferno, in the province of Varese, so it is about 50 km from Milan. It has two terminals: most airlines depart from Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 is for the exclusive use of EasyJet.
Linate Aiport: The airport is located within the area of the city of Milan, near the municipalities of Peschiera Borromeo and Segrate. It is the third airport in Lombardy for passenger traffic, has only one terminal and even if it is small due to its proximity to the centre, is one of the chosen ones to reach the city.
Bergamo Orio al Serio Airport: This airport is located between the municipalities of Bergamo and Seriate and is the third Italian airport in number of passengers with more than 40 million going through it every year. It belongs entirely to the company RyanAir, which has a private hangar here and operates international and European flights.
Distance between Milan's Airports and some points of interest.
Depending on where you land, distances to major points of interest in the city can vary widely. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, in fact, both Malpensa and Bergamo are outside the province, while Linate is the only airport in the city. For this reason, when planning your trip, pay more attention to the choice of arrival airport, traffic conditions, the season, the day of the week, not forgetting the motorway toll. Here are some examples of distance and travel times:
Distance between Malpensa Airport and Duomo of Milan: 53 km via the A8 motorway: journey time approximately one hour;
Distance between Linate Airport and Duomo of Milan: 7 km via Forlanini - journey time around 20 minutes;
Distance between Orio al Serio Airport and Duomo of Milan: 53 km via the A4 motorway - journey time approximately 50 minutes;
Transport in Milan
Upon arrival at the airport there are different transportation solutions for each Milan airport. The shared solutions, i.e. the services you will find available at the three airports, are taxis: both public and private. You will find the first ones departing from the main gates of the terminals, but their availability is conditioned by the schedule, the day of the week and the condition of traffic. In this first case, there is sometimes a very long wait for availability, as well as an expense often much higher than with a private taxi.
For all these reasons, we recommend the convenience and speed of the Taxi service in Milan, i.e. a private taxi at a fixed price, with more competitive and affordable prices than the proposed public fares, especially if you travel in a group.
Once in the city, understanding how to get around by public transport and starting your journey will be very simple. The transport company is called ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) Milan Transport Agency in Italian and has different types of tickets to access the metro, tram, bus and train services that run throughout the city area. Getting around is very convenient and cheap, they have vehicles that travel almost all day, with alternative replacement routes during the night. The metro is fast and frequent at all times, with 4 lines covering the city area, while moving with trams and buses can be much slower, especially at rush hours.</p
If you prefer to use car, three bypass roads run out of the city, north, west and east, forming a ring around the city, making it easy and convenient to get to any destination or even points of interest on the outskirts. On the other hand, using the car in the centre is certainly more complicated due to traffic, numerous areas of limited traffic, and sparse parking lots.
