Getting around Barcelona with the different private and public modes of transport

In this section of the website, you will find all the information you'll need with regard to getting around the city of Barcelona using both private and public modes of transport. Public transport in the Catalonian capital stretches across the entire city like a network of capillaries which thus guarantees a pretty good connecting service that works so well, many of the city's inhabitants do not own a personal means of transport. Passengers can benefit from transport with the convenience of a single ticket which is valid for various different means of transport including the night buses and the Metro.

If you are hoping to discover which of the many transport options is the best, you will find that it doesn't exist as so much depends on where you want to get to and whether or not you enjoy climbing! In fact, many of Barcelona's most famous attractions such as Park Güell or Montjuïc Castle, for example, are located at the highest points of the city and quite often, the metro stops are at the foot of these hills. So, with the exception of these attractions, the metro is definitely the quickest means of transport and requires the least waiting time. However, it does have the disadvantage of running below ground and therefore, doesn't provide any opportunities to admire some of the spectacular views of the city. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a panoramic means of transport, then without doubt, the double-decker Tourist Bus is the best choice. Because, in addition to the panoramic views of the city, it offers the convenience of strategically placed stops which are just a stone's throw from the city's most beautiful attractions: Tourist Bus.

Daytime and night-time city transport systems

The Metro and the Railway

Barcelona's Metro system is comprised of 11 lines which are differentiated from each other by colour and numbers as well as to theMontjuic Cable Car which connects the Paral-lel station with the famous park of Montjuic. It is important to understand that the Metro lines are actually operated by different public transport companies. The TMB is responsible for the majority of the metro lines with the exception of lines L6, L7 and L8 which are operated by the railway company of the region of Catalonia (FGC). Due to this, tickets or passes from the TMB are not valid on lines L6, L7 and L8 and vice versa.

Buses and the Nitbus

One way of getting around the city easily on the bus network is to remember that the letter "V" in front of the number of the bus indicates that this particular line crosses the city vertically, i.e., in the opposite direction to the sea. On the other hand, the 7 bus lines that start with the letter "H" travel along the coast and extend across the city in a parallel direction up to the most northerly line (the H4) which is located at the city's exit. It is also worth knowing that the D20 line which departs from Barceloneta for Paral-lel and Carrer de Sants, passes through the Placa d'Espanya. And, to finish off, there are also the night buses which are known as the Nitbus (the "N" lines) which come into service every night after the last Metro service finishes. If you want to check the map, have a look at: Map of Barcelona's bus routes.

Getting around by car

For those who decide to get around Barcelona by car, in other words, visitors who decide to hire a car or who arrive from other parts of the country, you should bear in mind the heavy traffic and frequent difficulties in finding somewhere to park the car (which is chargeable) in the spaces that are marked with blue lines. We would also suggest that you pay close attention to the regulations at each parking place. In fact, there is often a time limit which needs to be taken into consideration. There is also underground parking in the event that more time is required and in this instance, we would recommend that you download the App or make a booking on-line on the page: park-click.

Getting around by bicycle

Getting around the streets of Barcelona on a bicycle is really easy and, of course, economical. There aren't that many climbs, (except in the neighbourhoods of Gràcia and Montjuic) and it is easy and simple to hire a city bike at one of the numerous stations that are all over the city.

Private Taxis and Public Taxis

A Private Taxi is a taxi service at a fixed price which can be booked for airport transfers to the hotel or any other destination specified by the client. On the other hand, the Public Taxis are the famous black and yellow taxis which are visible all over the streets of Barcelona and which are very useful for quick journeys around the city but are less so when it comes to airport transfers as the cost varies according to the journey time. For further details and to book, go to the web page: Private Taxis Barcelona.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT PRICES 2018 (BCN)

The single management system covering public transport, makes it possible to use the same ticket for the Metro and for the Bus network and these can be purchased in the vending machienes which are situated at the entrances to the Metro stations.The price does depend on the selected area but for most tourists who are looking to visit the main attractions, buying a ticket that covers Zones 1-6 should suffice.

  • Single ticket (Zones 1-6) costs €2.20;
  • A T10 Pass (Zones 1-6) costs €10.20 which equates to €1.00 for each trip.

The Pass is not user specific, it is a ticket that is valid for 10 journeys so you can easily share it within the family group or with the friends with whom you are travelling.
