London Heathrow Airport

Heathrow is the capital's main airport handling in excess of 70 million passengers annually. The airport is located about 30 km west of the city centre within the district of Greater London and is close to the M25 motorway which encircles the British capital. Due to its proximity to the city centre and its easy accessibility, it is one of London's busiest airports. There are 5 Terminals which serve 3 km of runways and it is connected to the centre via 3 separate metro stations.  Within the underground network, there are free shuttle trains which transport users between one terminal and another. Heathrow is home to British Airways which is the national carrier and functions as the nerve centre for those who are arriving from other parts of the UK and the rest of the world.

Distances from Heathrow Airport to some main points of interest

Heathrow Airport is one of the closest airports to the city centre, of those which serve the English capital, but the choice of transfer service shouldn't be underestimated. In fact, getting from the airport to the city centre with a public taxi is always a quick and comfortable option but, it isn't cheap because the fare is based on a taximeter and not on the distance to your destination so this can vary depending on the traffic conditions and the time of day. In fact, travelling at peak times or at night can significantly increase the price of your journey! For this reason, we strongly recommend the use of one of our London Taxis.  The fare is locked in at the time of booking so you won't have any nasty surprises with the fare when you arrive at your destination.

Here are some examples of different distances and travel times:

• From Heathrow to Big Ben: a distance of 30 km with an estimated travel time of 50 minutes with a private vehicle;
• From Heathrow to Tower Bridge: a distance of 30 km with an estimated travel time of around an hour with a private vehicle;
• From Heathrow to Buckingham Palace: a distance of 25 km with an estimated travel time of around 45 minutes with a private vehicle;

Transport to London

In order to reach central London from Heathrow Airport, there are several different options available:

• The Underground: Heathrow's Undergound stations are on the Picadilly Line and has a journey time to the city centre of about an hour with a one way ticket costing £6.00;
• Trains: The Heathrow Express enables you to reach Paddington Station in around 15 minutes with a ticket priced at £25.00.  Alternatively, the Heathrow Connect makes several stops which increases the journey time by around 40 mintues but a single ticket costs just over £10.00;
• Bus: the National Express coaches will take you to Victoria Station with a journey time that varies significantly, depending on the traffic, from 40 to 80 minutes and costs around £10.00;
• Public Taxis: the famous London black cabs will take you straight to your required destination with a ride costing a minimum of £48.00 which is regulated by the taximeter so a lot will depend on the traffic conditions, the final destination and any applicable supplements for travelling at night or on public holidays;
• London taxi service (private transfers): will be charged at xx Euros and you don't have to wait at the airport, you won't have to try and find a taxi as you exit the terminal, journeys can be arranged 24 hours a day and the rate is fixed at the time of booking so doesn't rely on a meter to calculate the fare.

Our advice, once you've arrived in the centre of the capital, is to move around using public transport. This is a reasonably efficient service in London and you can decide whether you want to travel around by bus or by tube.  The "Tube" as it is generally referred to by the locals, is the oldest and most extensive underground service in Europe with 12 Lines and 274 stations.  The red-coloured bus network with its iconic double-deckers, covers over 700 routes, thus enabling you to reach any point in the city. 

The underground trains are operational from early in the morning until around midnight with extra night services available at the weekends. The cost of the tickets varies depending on the end destination: a single ticket on the Underground starts from £4.90 on the Tube and from £1.50 on the buses.
